Uzbekistan: Land of Ancient Monuments

Uzbekistan, officially the Republic of Uzbekistan, is a doubly landlocked country in Central Asia. It is a unitary, constitutional, presidential republic, comprising 12 provinces, 1 autonomous republic, and 1 capital city. Uzbekistan is bordered by five countries: Kazakhstan and the Aral Sea to the north; Tajikistan to the southeast; Kyrgyzstan to the northeast; Afghanistan to the south; and Turkmenistan to the southwest. The Capital and largest city is Tashkent. The Currency is Uzbekistan som (UZS). Uzbekistan is famous for its  natural fruits, vegetables and the most delicious sweet in the world.


Some interesting facts are:
1.  Uzbekistan has almost 88% Muslims, and hardly 5% of them practice it.


2. Uzbekistan’s Muruntau gold mine is one of the largest open pit gold mines in the world.


3. Tashkent’s metro features chandeliers, marble pillars and ceilings, granite, and engraved metal. It has been called one of the most beautiful train stations in the world.


4. The way to greet an Uzbek woman is by bowing to her with your right hand placed over your heart.



5. The highest point is Hisar ridge (4643 meters above sea level).


6. The lowest point is depression Mynbulak (-12.8 meters below sea level).


7. Uzbekistan, along with Liechtenstein is the only countries in the world, which neighbors do not have access to the sea.

8. The oldest cities of Uzbekistan are more than 2750 years old, and the most famous of them - Samarkand, along with Rome, one of the oldest cities in the world.


9. On shore of Qashqadaryo is located one of the first five latitude stations in the world and its called Kitab. In the spring of 2010 Kitab team at ORI-40 start search for hazardous near-Earth asteroids.

10. Uzbekistan is the only Central Asian city which subway was built in 1977.


11. Tashkent - one of the few cities in the world where you can see the starry night sky and it’s possible because of low gas content.
