Armenia: The 1st Nation To Adopt Christianity

Armenia, officially the Republic of Armenia, is a mountainous country in the South Caucasus region of Eurasia. Located in the north of Western Asia, it is bordered by Turkey to the west, Georgia to the north, the de facto independent Nagorno-Karabakh Republic and Azerbaijan to the east, and Iran and the Azerbaijani exclave of Nakhchivan to the south. The Capital and largest city is Yerevan. The Currency is Dram (AMD).


Some interesting facts are:
1. Armenia is home to the world’s longest non-stop double track cable car.The cable car runs for a total of 5,752 meters, or 18,871 feet.


2. The country’s national symbol is Mt. Ararat, But Mt. Ararat is actually located in Turkey.


3. There are approximately 11 million Armenians (or of Armenian descent) worldwide, and only 3 million reside in Armenia.


4. Armenia is rumored to be the first to adopt Christianity in 301 A.D. The Kingdom of Armenia was the first state to adopt Christianity as its religion, in the early years of the 4th century.


5. Armenia has the world’s best apricots, considered to taste better than anywhere else in the world.


6. Lake Sevan, situated in the highlands of Armenia, forms one of the largest lakes in the world.


7. Armenia's Ararat Valley houses a huge underground lake.


8. The highest point in Armenia is formed by Mount Aragats (4090 m), which houses a dormant volcano.


9. Yerevan falls in Europe but doesn't come under Schengen Visa; visa is issued by Armenian embassy in India.


10. Tsaghkadzor is winter ski resort town near Yerevan.
