Kyrgyzstan: Home of Great Glaciers

Kyrgyzstan, officially the Kyrgyz Republic, formerly known as Kirghizia, is a country located in Central Asia. Landlocked and mountainous, Kyrgyzstan is bordered by Kazakhstan to the north, Uzbekistan to the west, Tajikistan to the southwest and China to the east. Its capital and largest city is Bishkek. The currency is Som (KGS).


Some interesting facts are:
1. There are over 88 major mountain ranges in Kyrgyzstan, making up about more than 70 percent of the country’s territory.

2. Kyrgyzstan has the lengthiest epic in the world. “Manas” a Kyrgyz epic poem with 500,000 lines.


3. Kyrgyzstan is a country with two official languages: Russian and Kyrgyz.


4. The most famous national drink is horse milk “kumyz”.


5. Kyrgyzstan’s walnut forests are among the world’s largest natural forests of this type.


6. The Inylchek Glacier of Kyrgyzstan is one of the largest glaciers in the world.


7. Alcohol is very cheap in Kyrgyzstan. A bottle of vodka is priced at around 180 som (3.5 EUR), while beer costs 60 som (1.2 EUR).

8. People in Kyrgyzstan are fond of tea. It is like a replacement for water.


9. The highest point in Kyrgyzstan is formed by Peak Pobedy (7,439 m).


10. An interesting fact about Lake Issyk Kul, meaning "warm sea", is that it never ever freezes, in spite of being sited in the mountains.
