Tajikistan: The Area of Unique Mountain Landscapes

Tajikistan, officially the Republic of Tajikistan , is a mountainous landlocked sovereign country in Central Asia. With an estimated 8 million people in 2013, it is the 98th most populous country and with an area covering 143,100 km2, it is the 96th largest country in the world in terms of area. It is bordered by Afghanistan to the south, Uzbekistan to the west, Kyrgyzstan to the north, and China to the east. The Capital and largest city is Dushanbe. The Currency is Somoni (TJS).


Some interesting facts are:
1. The area of Tajikistan has been inhabited since 4000 BC.

2. Ismoili Somoni was a popular ruler of the Tajiks at the beginning of the 10th century. Today, one of the highest mountain points in Tajikistan is named after him.


3. Tajikistan is covered by the Pamir mountain range, with more than 50% of the country above 3,000 meters, or 9,800 feet and 90% of the country is considered mountainous.

4. The highest mountain is Ismoil Somoni Peak at 7,495 meters or 24,590 feet, followed by Ibn Sina Peak, Peak Korzhenevskaya, Independence Peak, the Akademiya Nauk Range, Karl Marx Peak, Garmo Peak, Mayakovskiy Peak, Concord Peak, and Kyzylart Pass.

5. There are more than 900 rivers in Tajikistan and about 20 main lakes.


6. The legendary Silk Road passed through Tajikistan going from China to Europe.

7. The Iskanderkul Lake of Tajikistan is named after Alexander the Great.

8. Fergana Valley is an area that is shared by Tajikistan, with Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan.

9. Karabair and Lokai horses are reared in Tajikistan.


10. The cuisine in Tajikistan includes dried fruit, nuts, halva, non bread, thick yogurt, and different types of rice dishes and soups.
