Cyprus, officially the Republic of Cyprus, is an island country in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea. Cyprus is the third largest and third most populous island in the Mediterranean, and a member state of the European Union. It is located south of Turkey, west of Syria and Lebanon, northwest of Israel and the Gaza Strip, north of Egypt and east of Greece.
The earliest known human activity on the island dates to around the 10th millennium BC. Archaeological remains from this period include the well-preserved Neolithic village of Khirokitia, and Cyprus is home to some of the oldest water wells in the world. Cyprus was settled by Mycenaean Greeks in two waves in the 2nd millennium BC. At a strategic location in the Middle East, it was subsequently occupied by several major powers, including the empires of the Assyrians, Egyptians and Persians, from whom the island was seized in 333 BC by Alexander the Great. Subsequent rule by Ptolemaic Egypt, the Classical and Eastern Roman Empire, Arab caliphates for a short period, the French Lusignan dynasty and the Venetians, was followed by over three centuries of Ottoman rule between 1571 and 1878 (de jure until 1914). The capital is Nicosia. The currency is Euro (EUR).

1. Cyprus is known as 'the playground of the gods', and for good reason too! Aphrodite is said to have risen out of the water near Paphos.
2. In geological term Cyprus is an ophiolite. It rose out of the sea around 20 million years ago.
3. Cyprus is one of only a few places in the world where Green Turtles & Loggerhead Turtles nest.
4. There is a map of Cyprus on its flag, the only nation to do so until Kosovo did the same in 2008.
5. Mount Olympus, which is notable in Greek mythology as being the home of the gods, is the tallest mountain in the Troodos range.
6. Cyprus is a divided island. The North part of the island, called the “Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus”, is ruled by the Turks. The southern part of the island is known as the Independent Republic of Cyprus or “Greek Cyprus” even though it’s not part of Greece. However, this gets confusing since the entire island is part of the European Union, with the exemption of the northern portion of the island ruled by Turkey.
7. As the story goes, Cyprus was the birthplace of the Greek goddess of love, Aphrodite. But its long history of love also includes the fact that it was a gift from Antony to Cleopatra; she apparently used native plants to make her own exotic perfume. Another myth has it that Richard the Lionheart skipped a year of the Crusades to live there when he fell in love with a local woman.
