Estonia: The Most Libertarian Country In The World

Estonia, officially the Republic of Estonia, is a country in the Baltic region of Northern Europe. It is bordered to the north by the Gulf of Finland, to the west by the Baltic Sea, to the south by Latvia (343 km), and to the east by Lake Peipus and Russia (338.6 km). Across the Baltic Sea lies Sweden in the west and Finland in the north. The territory of Estonia covers 45,227 km2, and is influenced by a humid continental climate. The capital and largest city is Tallinn. The currency is Euro (€)(EUR).

1. Estonia is named after the “Ests” who inhabited the region in the first Century AD.

2. Estonia celebrates two Independence Days; the first is the 24th of February, 1918, and the second is the 20th of August, 1991, both commemorating independence from the Soviet Union.


3. Estonia was the first country in the world to use online political voting.


4. Out of the nearly 200 countries in the world, Estonia ranks in the second place with a literacy rate of 99.8%.


5. They have the biggest collection of folk songs in the world with written records of 133,000 folk songs.


6. Suur Munamägi, at a measly 318 meters (about 1,000 feet), is the tallest mountain in the country.


7. Estonia has one of the highest rates of atheism in the world, with only 16% expressing a belief in a god in a 2005 poll.


8. Due to the low population density, half the country is forested, which makes for great hiking opportunities.


9. The genetics researchers at Tartu University are close to a breakthrough in the creation of a vaccine against HIV.


10. Estonia is the country where Skype was born.
