Iceland: The Land Of Elves, Trolls & Ghosts

Iceland is a Nordic island country between the North Atlantic and the Arctic Ocean. It has a population of 329,100 and an area of 103,000 km2, making it the most sparsely populated country in Europe. The capital and largest city is Reykjavík. Reykjavik and the surrounding areas in the southwest of the country are home to over two-thirds of the population. Iceland is volcanically and geologically active. The interior consists of a plateau characterized by sand and lava fields, mountains and glaciers, while many glacial rivers flow to the sea through the lowlands. Iceland is warmed by the Gulf Stream and has a temperate climate, despite a high latitude just outside the Arctic Circle. The currency is Icelandic króna (ISK).

Some interesting facts are:
1. In Iceland mosquitoes do not exist. Mostly because its too cold for them to thrive and partly because the locals are usually bundled up in fur that mosquitoes’ cant feed on them.

2. In 2010 Iceland banned strip clubs.

3. Consumption of Coca–Cola per capita here is higher than in any other country.

4. Icelandic state has a monopoly on the sale of alcohol.

5. Iceland was the first country in the world to have a democratically elected female head of state.

6. Not a single runestone has been found in Iceland until today.

7. The largest glacier in Europe, Vatnajökull, is located in Iceland (8300 km2).

8. Öskjuvatn is the deepest lake in Iceland. It was formed as a result of a volcano eruption in 1875.

9. The Hvalfjörður Tunnel near Reykjavik is one of the longest underground tunnels in the world.

10. Elves, trolls and ghosts:

Surveys show that despite their obsession with modern technology, as many as 80% of Icelanders believe in the existence of elves. Even today, roads have been rerouted and building plans redesigned or abandoned to avoid disturbing rocks where elves are said to live.

All around the country, strange lava formations were once explained in folktales as trolls who were turned to stone when caught outdoors in daylight. But only children in Iceland believe in trolls today, and the once widespread belief in ghosts is in decline, some say because electricity has taken the fright out of the long winter nights.
