Belarus: "White Russia"

Belarus, officially the Republic of Belarus, is a landlocked country in Eastern Europe bordered by Russia to the northeast, Ukraine to the south, Poland to the west, and Lithuania and Latvia to the northwest. Major cities include Brest, Hrodna, Homiel, Mahilyow and Vitsebsk. Over 40% of its 207,600 square kilometres is forested. Its strongest economic sectors are service industries and manufacturing. The capital and largest city is Minsk. The currency is Belarusian Ruble (BYR).


Some interesting facts are:
1. Most of the monuments in Belarus dedicated to Lenin. In every city there is a Lenin Street.


2. National Park "Pripyat" - the only place on earth where there are prehistoric floodplain oak forests.


3. National Library of Belarus. The building is 72.6 meters high (20th floor) and a weight of 115 000 tonnes (do not think the books). Total area - 112,6 thousand m². The library is one of the largest in the world.


4. Belovezhskaya Pushcha National Park, the remainder of primeval European forest, is a World Heritage Site.


5. The oldest city of Belarus is Polotsk, which has been in existence since 862 AD.


6. The oldest monument in Belarus is St Sophia's Cathedral (Polotsk), built between 1044 and 1066.


7. There was a nuclear disaster in Ukraine in 1986 near the Belarusian borders. Following the disaster Belarus has been suffering high rates cancer and birth abnormalities and about a quarter of its land has been declared uninhabitable.

8. The highest point in Belarus is formed by Mount Dzyarzhynskaya (346 m). While, the lowest point is formed by Nyoman River (90 m). The average elevation of the country is 160 m above sea level.

9. The largest lake in Belarus is Lake Naroch.
