Afghanistan: The Craft of Great Antiquity

Afghanistan, officially the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, is a landlocked country located within South Asia and Central Asia. It has a population of approximately 31 million people, making it the 42nd most populous country in the world. It is bordered by Pakistan in the south and east; Iran in the west; Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan in the north; and China in the far northeast. Its territory covers 652,000 km2, making it the 41st largest country in the world. The Capital and largest city is Kabul. The Currency is Afghani (AFN).


Some interesting facts are:
1. The highest mountain range of Afghanistan is Hindu Kush, which rises above 18,000 feet.

2. Buzkashi, meaning "goat grabbing", is the national sport of Afghanistan.

3. Opium is the fastest and largest growing crop in Afghanistan.

4. The highest point in the country is formed by Nowshak, which is situated at 7,485 m (24,557 ft) above sea level.

5. Afghans celebrate their new year, Nawroz, on 21 March, the first day of spring.

6. Alexander the Great was the first to build Herat's ancient citadel when he captured the city in 330BC.

7. Kandahar airfield in southern Afghanistan is said to be the busiest single runway airstrip in the world.

8. The world's first oil paintings were drawn not in Renaissance Europe but in the caves of Bamiyan, in the central highlands of Afghanistan around 650BC.
