Jordan: The Quality Of Life

Jordan, officially the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, is an Arab kingdom in the Middle East, on the East Bank of the Jordan River. Jordan is bordered by Saudi Arabia to the south and east, Iraq to the north-east, Syria to the north, and Israel and Palestine to the west.

After the post-World War I division of West Asia by Britain and France, the Emirate of Transjordan was officially recognized by the Council of the League of Nations in 1922. In 1946, Jordan became an independent sovereign state officially known as the Hashemite Kingdom of Transjordan. After capturing the West Bank during the 1948 Arab–Israeli War, Abdullah I took the title King of Jordan. The name of the state was changed to The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan on 1 December 1948. The capital and largest city is Amman. The currency is Jordanian Dinar (JOD).

Some interesting facts are:
1. The Ain Ghazal site, situated near Amman, is said to have been first inhabited over 9,000 years ago.

2.It is believed that Moses is buried on Mount Nebo of Jordan.

3. The Dead Sea, in the northwest of Jordan, forms the lowest point on earth.

4. The national dish of Jordan is Mansaf, a large tray of rice with chunks of stewed lamb and jameed, a yogurt sauce.

5. One of the Seven Wonders of the World, the city of Petra was literally carved into rock 2000 years ago. It was only in the 19th century that the Western world got to know of it. This city has to be entered through a narrow gorge that is only 1.25 km wide.

6. The Baptism site by the Jordan River is one of modern biblical archeology’s most notable discoveries. It is believed that this area called Wadi Kharar is where John the Baptist resided and was the baptism place of Jesus Christ.

7. Almost every single building in Amman is made of stone or concrete and clad with thin, white limestone slabs. Thus there really are no landmarks and every building looks almost identical.

8. The Kings' Highway, running from Amman to Aqaba, has many historic sites along the route.
