Ukraine is a country in Eastern Europe. It has an area of 603,628 km2, making it the largest country entirely within Europe. Ukraine borders Russia to the east and northeast, Belarus to the northwest, Poland and Slovakia to the west, Hungary, Romania, and Moldova to the southwest, and the Black Sea and Sea of Azov to the south and southeast, respectively.
The territory of modern Ukraine has been inhabited since 32,000 BC. During the Middle Ages, the area was a key center of East Slavic culture, with the powerful state of Kievan Rus' forming the basis of Ukrainian identity. Following its fragmentation in the 13th century, the territory was contested, ruled and divided by a variety of powers, including Lithuania, Poland, the Ottoman Empire, Austro-Hungary, and Russia. A Cossack republic emerged and prospered during the 17th and 18th centuries, but Ukraine's territories remained divided until they were consolidated into a Soviet republic in the 20th century. It became independent in 1991 following the dissolution of the Soviet Union. The capital and largest city is Kiev. The currency is Ukrainian Hryvnia (UAH).

4. Kiev-pechersk Lavra is one of the biggest Orthodox monasteries in the world. Trembita is the longest musical instrument in the world. It is a very long pipe played on by Hutsul ethnicity from the Carpathian Mountains.
5. Ukraine is one of the largest grain exporters in the world.
6. Ukrainians wear their wedding ring on the ring finger of their right hand instead of their left hand.
7. Khreshchatyk Street in Kiev is the shortest yet widest main city street in the world. Its length is 1.2 km.
8. The world’s heaviest aircraft is An-225 Mriya is created by the Kiev-based Antonov design bureau. The plane was designed to airlift space shuttles and rocket boosters, however is now carrying oversized payloads.
9. The oldest map known to scientists, as well as the most ancient settlement of Homo Sapiens were found in Ukraine, in the village of Mezhireche. They are 14.5 - 15 thousand years old. The map is cut out of the bones of a mammoth. The settlement is made of the same material.
