Laos: The Land of a Million Elephants

Laos, officially the Lao People's Democratic Republic (LPDR), is a landlocked country in Southeast Asia, bordered by Burma and the People's Republic of China to the northwest, Vietnam to the east, Cambodia to the south, and Thailand to the west. Since 1975, it has been ruled by a Marxist and communist government. Its population was estimated to be around 6.8 million in July 2014. The Capital and largest city is Vientiane.The Currency is Kip (LAK).

Some interesting facts are:
1. The Laotian New Year celebration is a 3-day-long festival held from April 13 to 15.

2. The Khone Papeng, which is found in Laos, is the largest waterfall in the whole of Southeast Asia.

3. Laos has been tagged as the “World’s Most Bombed Country.” Over two billion tons of bombs were dropped in Laos during the Vietnam War.

4. The highest point in Laos, the Phou Bia, is unfortunately not open to tourists because it is filled with unexploded ammunition.

5. Laos’ biggest agricultural export is coffee.

6. A full 80% of all Laotian work is in agriculture.

7. The oldest modern human fossil was found in a cave in northern Laos and is believed to have been 46,000 years old.

8. Laos’ national sport is Kator, which is similar to volleyball except for the fact that players use their feet instead of their hands to get the ball over the net.

9. Luxemborg is the only country that uses more solar energy than Laos.

10. More than one hundred species of large mammal consider Laos home, including Asian elephants, tigers, wild cattle, gibbons and dolphins.
